Agenda will include brief remarks by Mayor Ferrell and Jennifer Adams followed by a ribbon cutting to officially open Family Funland and the AbilityWhirl for play.
Family Funland is a highly popular play structure built by the city and volunteers in the early 1990s and was recently rebuilt. With strong support from the city’s volunteer Parks Commission and inclusive program volunteers the city decided to incorporate structures that enable kids with physical disabilities to play at the popular site.
The Federal Way Rotary raised $54,700 for the project, enabling the city to install the AbilityWhirl, an innovative wheelchair roundabout that allows two kids in wheelchairs and their attendants to ride. The park features numerous ability-friendly play items, including braille play panels, and a tunnel, omni spin whirl, and many other items for mobility-impaired kids.
The rebuilt and expanded Family Funland illustrates Federal Way’s strong commitment to ensure that recreational facilities are available to people of all abilities. Please join us in celebrating a park for all of Federal Way’s kids.
